The Dover City Council has approved an additional half-percent tax on hotel stays that will go into effect in 2020.

The increase adds to the 8-percent state lodging tax currently in place. In 2021, the city tax will raise to 1 percent, and in 2022 it goes up to 1.5 percent.

The ordinance was passed by a vote of 7-2. State legislation enacted in June paved the way for the new tax.

“Although I believe that just because we have the right to do it, doesn’t mean that we need to do it or should do it," City Councilman Roy Sudler Jr., who voted against the tax, said in a story published by the Delaware State News. "At this present moment, I will not be supporting the raising of any taxes based on my talks with my constituents.”

A separate bill passed by the General Assembly may allow Kent County to impose its own additional lodging tax.
