ChristianaCare issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
For making a difference in the lives of others by giving of their time and energy, the Young Friends of ChristianaCare — 64 high school students from throughout Delaware — were honored with the 2019 Youth in Philanthropy Award from the Brandywine (DE) chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
The Youth in Philanthropy Award recognizes individual youths or youth groups who have made a significant impact on a cause or program through fundraising and volunteer activities.
Since its launch in 2016, the Young Friends group has supported ChristianaCare programs including the First State School for chronically ill children; CampFRESH, a health education program for young people; and the Emergency Services Special Needs fund, raising nearly $10,000 for these initiatives.
Most recently, the teens collected more than 6,000 books for the ChristianaCare Pediatrics Department so that children who visit the hospital can browse and take a favorite home with them when they are discharged.
The Young Friends of ChristianaCare in 2018 collected more than 6,000 books for pediatrics patients to take home after hospital care.
During their history, the group members also have acted as grant makers, reviewing funding requests from various groups within ChristianaCare and awarding $25,000 to selected applicants.
In addition to creating fundraising projects — complete with goals, timetables and communications and marketing plans — Young Friends seek educational enrichment, meeting quarterly to learn about health, science and innovation from ChristianaCare experts who provide a peek inside the health system, Delaware’s largest private employer.
