New Castle residents are getting prepared for Aiken Refuse to take over their refuse and recycling service, which will extend the pay-by-the-bag plan that has been in place since the 1990s.
The city council signed a deal with the company last November, which turned out to be a three-year contract with a price tag that exceeded $6 million and allows Aiken Refuse to collect a fee for base collection services.
Cost for the new service provider will start in April, and residents will have to prepay quarterly for the tags that they can affix to a bag. The price for five tags will cost $16 per month, going up to 10 tags at $23.50 and 15 tags costing $31 per month. There is a maximum weight limit of 40 pounds per bag.
People who are renting, should note, that their landlords are responsible for paying for tags.
Aiken Refuse officials want to make sure people have accurate information on their service and plan to send detailed information to residents detailing where to send in payments and a map of the service area.
