City of Newark Parking Rate Increase Effective Tuesday, January 17 | City of Newark
Effective Tuesday, January 17, hourly parking rates in city-operated lots and on metered streets will increase by $1.00. Municipal parking lots will increase to $2.00 and meters will increase to $2.25 per hour. The change is a result of the 2023 budget process, during which City Council elected to implement the first rate increase since 1999. Members included revenue from increased fees as part of the FY2023 budget adopted in November and voted in favor of the ordinance implementing those rates in December.
Fees will be reduced by half twice per year from December 16 to January 15 and again June 16 to August 15 when University of Delaware enrollment is lower. Parking will continue to be free on holidays.
Businesses may purchase employee parking permits in Lots 2, 5, 6, and 7 at a discounted rate. Parking permits do not require drivers to pay an hourly rate. Questions about the available permits should be directed to newarkparking@newark.de.us.
Drivers that receive a parking violation will receive a 50% discount from the base fine rate if paid within 15 days of receipt.
